Vintage Writing Desk
Vintage writing desk in beautiful mahogany wood by Biggs Furniture. This lovely Federal style desk has great style and clean lines. It was crafted by a Virginian company known as Biggs Furniture. This vintage writing desk goes by the title, Hepplewhite Writing Table, Model number 2027.
Later purchased by Kittinger furniture, Biggs Furniture has created some excellent colonial and Federal style reproductions over the years. The company, founded in 1890, adhered to three strict principals. Firstly, they sought to use 18th century Master craftsman designs. Secondly, they used the finest Honduran mahogany. Thirdly, they produced and finished their furniture by hand.
These three tenets made Biggs a huge success for several decades. We love Biggs Furniture, and value very highly the pieces we have collected in years past.
This particular desk remains true to Biggs’ founding principals. As you can see by the title and design, this desk has for its inspiration George Hepplewhite Furniture. Antique Hepplewhite furniture has beautiful feminine shapes and delicate and refined proportions. Of course, this desk, with its tall elegant tapered legs and beautiful dainty profile is a great reproduction of Hepplewhite style.
The brass round Neoclassical style knobs and handles are very fitting for this reproduction desk. Very elegant indeed!
In addition, this desk is finished on both sides, with faux drawers and hardware repeated on the back side. This allows the future owner to put this beautiful writing desk in the center of a room, or in front of a window.
This desk is in excellent restored condition. Because vintage writing desks can often take a beating, this 50 or 60 year old desk was in need of a little love. We decided to strip the old finish that remained and lightly sand the desk. We then carefully selected a rich and deep mahogany stain that would remain similar to the Biggs signature finish. Finally, we finished the desk with a few coats of lacquer to help preserve the future of this heirloom piece. Certainly, it will inspire many great letters, books or other writing projects in the future!
Thank you for inviting us into your vintage home!
