Description
Impressive antique Japanese Imari porcelain vase, dating to the Meiji period (1868–1912). This beautiful vase has such rich colors and shows very good condition.
Antique Imari Vase
Standing an impressive 30.5 inches tall, this large-scale antique Imari vase features the richly detailed decoration and brilliant color palette for which Japanese Imari porcelain is so admired.
The tall baluster-form vase features a gracefully flared rim and is extensively hand decorated in the traditional Imari palette of deep cobalt blue, iron red and orange, creamy white, and gilt accents. Elaborate medallions cover the body, surrounded by densely patterned floral, foliate, and geometric decoration.
Large scenic panels depict traditional Japanese garden and landscape motifs. These include flowering plants, architectural elements, and stylized naturalistic scenes. Smaller cartouches, scrolling blossoms, and intricate patterned borders create a wonderfully layered appearance, while touches of gilding add richness throughout the design.
The neck continues the elaborate decoration with floral and geometric motifs beneath the broad flaring mouth. A decorative blue border around the foot provides a handsome finish to the substantial porcelain body.
Meiji Period Floor Vase
Produced during Japan’s Meiji period, when Japanese decorative arts became particularly sought after in Western markets, large Imari porcelains such as this were prized for their impressive scale, vivid coloring, and intricate workmanship. Imari porcelain was principally produced in the Arita area and exported through the port of Imari.
At over two and a half feet tall, this antique Imari vase has tremendous decorative presence and would make a striking focal point displayed on a pedestal, console, chest, or large center table.
