Of course, this antique bed has a lovely design, with a beautiful carved headboard, charming low footboard and side rails. Originally, this bed was strung with ropes to create a foundation for the bedding, which is why there are knobs all across the headboard, footboard and side rails.
Additionally, this bed bolts together with long screws. The frame fits tightly.
Victorian Walnut Bed
This Victorian Walnut bed has an unusual size, because it was made in the era before standard mattress sizes. Therefore, you have a few options if you would like to adapt it to modern bedding. As it sits, a custom mattress of 48 by 70 (often the size of RV mattresses) would fit between the rails. Certainly, you could create a foundation of plywood that sits on top of the original rails for this type of mattress. Some people also attach brackets to the side rails to sink a box frame inside of the rails.
We refinished this antique Victorian Walnut Bed in order to restore the beautiful wood. It is in good condition.
