Antique Immigrants Chest

Early solid oak antique immigrants chest with hand carved details. This is an early 18th Century (1720 or possibly earlier) period piece in original finish. The antique immigrants chest has many beautiful details and qualities of William and Mary style. Likely, it hails from England.

Antique Immigrants Trunk

The antique immigrants trunk has two doors in the front. These paneled oak doors have a bit of carved detail in the center. The wooden doors have wooden stops that keep them closed. The antique immigrants chest also has some carving on the front and side panels.

While a bit primitive in design, the carved hand crafted detail of the antique immigrants trunk demonstrates early craftsmanship and ingenuity. Of course, these features correspond to early Baroque design, also known as William and Mary style. The geometric top rail, for instance, has a repetitive block pattern. Of course, strong geometry and masculine design are hallmarks of William and Mary style.

The age of the antique immigrants chest makes this piece very desirable. To think that this chest likely immigrated from England in the 18th century is truly incredible. English furniture such as this chest would have held a early immigrants most precious valuables. This chest represents a very early English piece because of the William and Mary but also speaks of American Colonial history.

Of course, we can also witness the early construction techniques. This includes hand forged wooden dowels and hand planing. The top lid shows warping. However, we think that the warping simply looks appropriate for a piece of this age. Additionally, we left this early antique piece of furniture in original finish.
