Antique Oak Cabinet – French Antiques

Item: Antique Highly Carved Monumental Hunt Cabinet.

Age & Condition: Circa 1850. Original Finish and Very good Condition. A few blemishes on the base of the cabinet. One piece of glass may have been replaced.

Antique Oak Cabinet

This is a beautiful French antique oak cabinet. This beautiful antique oak cabinet demonstrates the best of age old craftsmanship, with its intense and robust array of carved animals and foliage. Indeed, a French hutch cabinet such as this commands attention.

The figures are done in high relief, and extend from the piece in almost total three dimensional form. Lions, pheasants and plants make up the very dynamic character of the antique oak cabinet, which seem to come alive. The drawer handles are also carved of oak and form two interlocking branches that extend from the drawer faces. Common of French furniture of this age and provenance, the theme of the hunt comes alive in this spectacular two piece French hutch cabinet.

French Hutch Cabinet

This period French hutch has a few signs of age. There is light wear and a water or heat ring to the surface between the two pieces on the top surface. There are a few places where the molding appears to have been mended. One piece of glass in the cabinet appears to be original hand blown, while the other seems more modern. Also, there are a few blemishes to the shelves. Please see photos.

Despite these small flaws, this cabinet is truly awe-inspiring and would make a fantastic statement piece in any historic home. The shelves would be beautiful decorated with old books, but could alternatively be used for china or mementos.
