Description

Antique Empire Dresser

Beautiful antique empire dresser dates to circa 1840. This empire chest has two little drawers on top. Thus, people use the term “Two over Four Chest”. The top two drawers were often called “glove drawers” and could be used by a gentleman or a lady.

This beautiful antique empire dresser has lovely mahogany veneers. Inside the drawers, it features poplar as the secondary timber. People have always considered mahogany a very desirable and expensive wood. Consequently, it would have been exorbitantly expensive for a craftsman to build this antique empire dresser entirely out of mahogany.

Notwithstanding, the beautiful veneers on this chest are outstanding! They elevate the antique empire dresser to the status of a very fine piece. Most fine furniture of this age had fancy veneer work, but not everyone could afford it. Certainly, it denotes wealth and class.

19th century woodworkers made this piece by hand, as can be seen from the fine hand dovetailing. Dovetailed drawer joints are one of the strongest joints on case furniture. Here, we see a dovetailing which is very thin, but which is not uniform. Obviously, this empire dresser and all the drawers have upheld the test of time. Finally, the antique empire dresser stands on turned mahogany legs.

Charming piece with beautiful character, we restored and refinished this antique empire chest. It has one noticeable fix to the veneer on the top drawer in the left upper corner. In summation, we see this beautiful dresser in any fine home. It stands out as a 19th century antique chest.
